”We are all citizens in the Danish society.” These words, spoken by a female speaker at a large demonstration outside the Danish Parliament, received enthusiastic applause. The demonstration was organized by different Muslim youth organizations, whose members are so-called second generation immigrants. The word ”citizen” conveyed the integration/identity duality. The relation between integration and identity was expressed as complementary and symmetrical and not, as commonly believed, as a contradiction.

The book discusses different aspects of ethnic minority citizenship: activities in a community center; participation in the Nørrebro neighborhood experiment in Copenhagen; life in a Muslim independent school; organizational activities among young Albanians from Macedonia; and efforts to establish a Muslim cemetery. A key word in these projects is “negotiation,” both internally in the group and externally with the Danish society. The field studies were carried out in connection with courses at Institute of Anthropology, University of Copenhagen.
