Despite claims to the opposite, political parties continue to play a central role in the Danish democracy. It is therefore important to know how the parties are doing. And we know that the major trend in recent decades has been a great decline in membership figures.

So far, however, we have only had limited knowledge about other important questions, for instance: Who are the remaining approximately 180,000 members, why have they joined a political party, how many of them are active in their party, which activities do they primarily participate in, and what do they think about different political issues, about their own party, and about Danish democracy?

These are some of the questions examined in this book about political party membership. It is based on a questionnaire survey carried out in 2000/2001, in which more than 5,200 members from the nine political parties then represented in Parliament participated.

The documentation from the survey (including question marginals) is published separately in: Undersøgelsen af medlemmerne af de danske partiorganisationer. Dokumentation.
