Knowledge has never played a bigger role than it does today. In our daily lives, we rely more and more on knowledge from highly specialized organizations, not least to keep our bearings in the endless debate on various phenomena. This book examines one aspect of every-day use of knowledge, namely the printed media’s mention of researchers, which, according to the study, has increased significantly from 1961 to 2001. And in contrast to earlier, when research results from natural sciences and health science dominated the news, social scientists seem to have taken over the column space today. They are rarely quoted for their research, however. Instead, they typically function as commentators on political decisions or other events. The political public sphere has, to some extent, become scientificized.
