The American society is, broadly speaking, a multicultural, civil, consumer- and rights-based society. In contrast, the Danish society is characterized by a homogenous population, a large public sector and a weak rights traditions. There are signs, however, that the Danish welfare state is turning into a welfare society whose citizens to some extent imitate Americans. Not that we are heading for an "American state of affairs", but our approach to problems that naturally arise along with growing multiculturalism and globalization appears to be based on solutions and models we know from an American context.
