Integration is about more than education and work; it is also about including ethnic minorities in the public discourse and in the democratic decision making processes. The book therefore checks the status of political integration or political citizenship, as migrant workers have become immigrants and then ethnic minorities.

The book presents detailed empirical analyses of the inclusion of ethnic minorities in political life in Denmark: What is the scope of their participation in local elections; who is elected to the local councils; how are the integration councils doing? What is the role of ethnic minority organizations? What is the political activity level for individual minority citizens, and how great is the gap between men and women? Do members of ethnic minorities feel attachment to Denmark, and do they trust the public authorities?

The book shows that the inclusion of ethnic minorities in political life is more successful than most other forms of integration in Danish society. In spite of this, ethnic minorities have not achieved equal status with other citizens in Denmark in terms of political citizenship.
