Along with the EU’s expansion, we have seen a growing interest in the effects of integration on European democracy and national democracy traditions. EU’s increasing influence on value distribution in the European societies naturally puts focus on the question of democracy. The anthology’s basic assumption is that the nation states, regardless of globalization, continue to play a central role in European politics – which does not prevent EU from having federal traits in certain areas. The anthology analyzes various aspects of EU’s democratic deficit and its effects on Danish democracy – including political participation and EU membership; a comparison of parliamentary control with EU policy in Denmark and other European countries; the substance and potential of European citizenship, how Danes understand democracy, and how this understanding limits our participation in the European Union.
