Territorial dynamics! Relish this combination of words – it sounds good, doesn’t it? But what does it mean? If it means dynamics that operate in and change territories, and ‘territories’ mean geographic areas like state, region, municipality and town, we all know examples. In that case, ‘territorial dynamics’ means to create new nations, cement old borders and establish transnational cooperation, etc. We know territorial dynamics from history and the present, from absolute monarchy and from the idea about a Europe of the Regions.

This book gives a more precise definition territorial dynamics and presents 13 examples of how it unfolds in disparate contexts: when we discuss the justification of counties and municipalities; when the Faeroe Islands discuss secession from Denmark; when EU discusses expansion; and when big cities speed up regional development. In all these examples, new lines are drawn on the map, new images form in our minds and the old ones are challenged.
