Social movements and associations have played a decisive role in the development of the European democracies, and not least in Denmark. This book focuses on social movements and on the relationship between social movements and associations in a changing society. It looks at the ability of movements and associations to recognize and express interests and conflicts, the peaceful or violent character of a conflict, and citizensÂ’ opportunities to organize and gain influence.

The book covers a broad spectrum. It presents new theories and methods, and discusses the relation between the established political system and social movements: Is it one of strong, incompatible opponents or one of cooperation? Are the movements indispensable stepping stones for marginalized groups and new social problems to gain access to the democratic decision making process? Do the associations have what it takes to be a qualified counterbalance to state and market? While the book does not offer a definitive answer to these questions, it demonstrates that social movements and associations make democracy more flexible and in the long term more resistant to anti-democratic tendencies.
