Power is a central concept with many meanings. Power is a visible phenomenon in connection with war, ethnic cleansing, violent demonstrations and various forms of discrimination. Power is also exerted when elected politicians implement legislation against the wishes of certain groups.

The concept of power is thus naturally defined by observable forms of influence based on force, control and sanctions. All actions that have a direct, oppressive influence on other people contain an element of power.

However, a definition that emphasizes the ’visible face’ of power is not complete. Recent power theory notes that the exercise of power is often covert and disguised. This expands the concept of power to include phenomena like manipulation, strategic behavior and socialization. Power has a visible as well as a non-visible face.
