Danish media coverage of refugees and immigrants is not limited to direct depictions of reality. Reality is interpreted and constructed so that it makes sense and establishes a context. The Danish media’s presentation of the refugee and immigrant issue has shifted many times since the issue appeared on the public agenda. In 1970, the general theme was "guest workers as labor power," where immigration was seen by some as a necessary labor supply to the thriving Danish industry, and others focused on the many social problems related to immigration. In 1984, crime was the general angle in the coverage of the immigrant issue. In the late 1990s, the media focused on the many problems associated with refugees and immigrants, and has thus contributed to the widening gap between "them" and "us." cover-12390.jpg (44789 bytes)
