Many people are skeptical towards globalization, and some think that the development has gone too far because capitalist interests have become too dominant. Concerns are often related to the visible consequences of economic integration, for instance when jobs close down and move abroad, and companies are taken over by foreign investors. On the other side of the coin are significant social advantages made possible by more effective resource consumption, which again creates a basis for better living conditions. Slowing down globalization is therefore a dubious way to tackle the distributional consequences. In addition, globalization is, to a large extent, dependent on technological progress, and is therefore, to a limited extent, a politically controlled process that can be regulated. Like any other change, globalization presents society and thereby the welfare state with many challenges as well as new opportunities.
